Faith: “Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.”
“Everybody should believe in something — I believe I’ll have another drink.”
-– Norm (character in the sitcom “Cheers”)
Whether it’s religion, politics, science, sports, or cold beverages, we all cling to certain beliefs. Whether we consciously think about it or not, every action we take is based on a deep and complex web of beliefs built on top of more beliefs. All of this is true whether we ‘believe it or not.’ Here’s a simple example:
When I pull up to a gas pump, put my credit card into the slot and start filling my gas tank, I do so with the belief that gasoline will come out at the rate and grade promised by the sign. I also take this action based on the belief that gas will help get me to my intended destination. Suppose my belief was that the pump would deliver lemonade instead of gasoline. Such a belief would lead me to a different action – I would fill my 5-gallon picnic jug instead of my gas tank. If I believed the pump to be incapable of providing what I need, I wouldn’t even start.

Beliefs Set to Music
I believe for every drop of rain that falls a flower grows,
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows.
I believe for everyone who goes astray, someone will come to show the way.
I believe, Oh, I believe.
I believe above the storm the smallest prayer, will still be heard.
I believe that someone in that great somewhere hears every word
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry, or touch a leaf, or see the sky,
Then I know why I believe.
— Lyrics to: “I Believe” by Erwin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl, Al Stillman
Beliefs in the Form of a Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. AMEN.
— Apostles’ Creed
