See You at the Top
by Zig Ziglar
Who Should Read It: Ages 10-100
Rudy, my college buddy and “partner in crime,” discovered “See You At the Top” in cassette form on a shelf in my family’s home. I think it belonged to my dad. We both listened to it and were inspired by it multiple times. Shortly thereafter, he gave me a copy of the book as a birthday present. To this day, Ziglar is one of my favorites.
Ziglar’s foundational philosophy is his own version of the Golden Rule:
“You can get everything in life you want, if you help enough other people get what they want.”
Best described as a tapestry of motivational and instructional stories, the book is organized according to the following outline:
- Self Image
- Your Relationship With Others
“See You At the Top” has since been reprinted, revised and republished numerous times. It has been translated into other languages and released in various formats.
Ziglar is a Christian. His presentations and publications are unapologetically Christian in nature, although I wouldn’t call them “preachy.” He simply shares both his philosophy and the source of it, the Bible. In the past, he has offered the same materials minus the religious content for use in schools so as to comply with Federal regulations.
My favorite story comes near the end of the book as a sort of wrap-up to all of the lessons taught. It’s the story of the Bernie Lofchick family and their son David. David was born with cerebral palsy. The struggles they endured as a family make for one of the most moving stories I’ve ever heard. It’s one everybody should read.
“You must have a goal because it’s just as difficult to reach a destination you don’t have, as it is to come back from a place you’ve never been.” — Zig Ziglar
“When you smile at someone and they smile back, you automatically feel better (and it definitely increases your ‘face value.’)” — Zig Ziglar
“The way you see life will largely determine what you get out of it.” — Zig Ziglar
